Single-word Windows Live Searches
In my blog logs, I’m getting hits like this:
65.55.109.75 - - [28/Dec/2008:17:10:30 -0500] “GET /blog/tag/cholesterol/ HTTP/1.0″ 200 30075 “http://search.live.com/results.aspx?q=cholesterol” “Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.2; SV1; .NET CLR 1.1.4322)”
There’s no way my little blog is showing up anywhere near the first page of results for a one-word search like ‘cholesterol.’ (If it were, I’d be getting a lot more than 15 visitors a day. I’ve even got hits from the keyword ‘there.’) But that IP address looks up as MSNbot. So what’s happening here; is MSN running a bot that pretends to be a browser and does deep searches into the thousands of SERPs, but sends a simple referrer URL that doesn’t show the paging the way it would with a real browser? I also get normal bot-type hits from msnbot from other IPs in the same range, and those don’t give a referrer URL, like you’d expect.
Anyone know what this is about? I get more of these than all other searches combined, so they’re clogging up my stats, which is annoying if they aren’t real.
